512,

I am directed by Mr. Secretary Shortt to refer to previous correspondence regarding the smuggling of Chinese subjects into this country and to say for the information

of Er. Secretary Churchill that Deportation Orders have now been made against a number of Chinese who have been found to have entered this comtry without permission. About forty men are now detained pending deportation, and in the majority of osses the men have admitted that they concealed themselves upon ships sailing from Hong Kong. It coours tolr, Shortt that the effect of sending the men beak to Hong Kong rather than to some other Chinese port would be of value in discouraging the agents who are responsible for the despatch of stowaways, and he would therefore be glad if arrangements could be made with the Government of Hong Kong for the man to be

allowed to land there.

I am to add that if this oần be arranged it is hoped to take advantage of a Government transport du to sail on the 7th October next,

on which it is understood that accommodation for the bulk of the men will be available. I am therefore to request that commieation with the Government of Hong Kong may be made by cable with a view to

/ebtaining The Under Secretary of State,

COLONIAL OFFICE.
